Quick Wins
- Mulch your grass trimmings. No need to bag your trimmings when you mow- it will decompose.
- Love coffee? Bring your coffee mug from home the next time you visit your favorite coffee shop. Plus, it’ll spare you from drinking the BPA and microplastics in to-go cups that leech into hot liquids.
- Recycle your electronics and gadgets: These are illegal to throw away, and the metals can be recovered for later reuse. Check the Fort Collins e-wast page for more resources. Another option is uBreakiFix. CSU has an option for staff and students, and many local companies have “Boards and Cords” days for their employees, so check with your employer.
- Don’t throw away batteries! If your work site doesn’t offer battery recycling, take them to the Timberline Recycling Center.
- Dispose of unused medicines properly. Don’t flush them. Most pharmacies have a drop-off box. This is more of an issue with clean water supply and not carbon emissions, but it is still important.
Big Impacts
- Reduce Single-use plastics.
- Take yard waste to be commercially composted. Branches, fall leaves, and other yard waste can be turned into mulch and soil. Dropoff locations in Fort Collins are listed here, and Doug Weitzel Inc accepts yard waste as well. The Green Waste program allows drop-off at the landfill but sends these materials to a different location than trash.
- Take advantage of household hazardous waste collection events. Fort Collins will take a large number of items a couple of times a year; watch here for the next event. This includes button batteries, pesticides, CFLs, bleach, automotive fluids, and many other things you don’t want in your home.
