The First Step: Efficiency

Find out where you are now

Start with a home energy assessment to see where your best opportunities for improvement are. These may be free or can cost up to $60. Visit the Fort Collins EpicHomes page or REenergize to sign up.

Quick Wins

  1. Change your thermostat: Lower your home’s temperature in the winter and raise it in the summer. You’ll naturally need less electricity, and you may not even notice a difference with a degree or two.
  2. Use LED bulbs everywhere. That heat from incandescent bulbs? That’s wasted energy- and money- going down the drain. Replace bulbs in all fixtures, indoors and out, for overall cost savings. If you sign up for the audit, they’ll even do it for you.

Big Impacts

  1. Improve insulation. Have your home checked for places where heat is escaping- it may even be under your floors if you have a crawlspace. Your home efficiency audit may check this for you.
  2. Replace old appliances with more efficient Energy-Star ones. Fort Collins offers some rebates, as does EfficiencyWorks (including on the Nest thermostat). You can also get rebates for recycling your old refrigerator or freezer here. Energy Star appliances have ratings for their efficiency; choose the most efficient options that will meet your needs.
  3. Buy a Nest thermostat to keep your house comfortable while you’re home and optimally efficient while you’re gone.
